Thrid Quartely Platform Meeting

The third quarter meeting of the National Disaster Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction/Climate Change Adaptation (NPDRR/CCA) took place on the 23rd August, 2017 at the International Conference Centre, The Gambia Coral Hotel with funding from the UNEP Early Warning Phase II Project. The discussion started with an open dialogue for more pragmatism of the platform in resource mobilization and advocacy for on increased political will for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

This third quarter platform meeting was coupled with the Disaster Loss Calculation Training by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). The UNISDR has realised that there is a global challenge of collecting, calculating, analysing and documenting disaster loss and countries are not able to track the economic impacts of disasters. This means that a serious data gap will limit our ability to know the real cost of disasters on individuals, communities, countries and the world. It also means that countries will be highly challenged in measuring and monitoring progress about the Sendai Targets, especially the target for ‘reducing the economic loss of disasters’. Bridging these challenges, it has developed a technology program that enables countries to capture the true cost of disaster loss on their economies and provide opportunity to report on the global targets for risk reduction.

Platform members, especially technicians, participated in the entire training while policymakers attended the official opening ceremony and the high level meeting components of the training. During the high level discussion, there was a recap on Sendai Framework for DRR, the SDGs, and the need for government support to track progress of these important commitments. The platform on the other hand, focused on for key areas: validation of its terms of reference (TOR), brainstorm on the development of the platform’s strategic plan, annual work plan, and a donor conference.
