Second Quarter National Platform Meeting -18th May 2016

As part of the agency mandates in coordinating Disasters and its related affairs; by virtue of this, the NDMA organized its second quarterly meeting for the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction/Climate Change Adaptation (DRR/CCA) with funding support from the UNEP Early Warning Phase II Project, at the Friendship Hostel in Bakau on Thursday 18th May 2017. The meeting was a follow-up to its first quarter meeting held at the UN House in 4th April 2017; and where the plan of action for building up the country resilience capacity and commitment on DRR/CCA was further discussed.

During this meeting, presentation recap of the last platform meeting was done, the Terms of Reference (ToRs) of the platform was also reviewed, and the election of chairperson was also done. The nomination/election was done via a participatory approach from the members; critically looking at people’s technical expertise and their relations with issues related DRR/CCA. The followings are the respective positions elected:

  1. Chairperson of National Platform for DRR/CCA - Mr. Ismalia Manjang, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment
  2. First Chairperson – Mr. Abdoulie Bah, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Office of the Vice President
  3. Second Vice Chairperson – Mr. Lamin Mai Fatty, Director, Department of Water Resources
  4. Secretary of the National Platform for DRR/CCA – (NDMA)

These will help the platform to have a sense of direction in its operation and easy monitoring on the proposed implementation of its activities in the wake of building the country’s resilience capacities in DRR/CCA.

The meeting brought together different actors across the country for a successful implementation of the post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction, ECOWAS Regional Strategy for DRR/CCA, AU and the NDMA Strategies for DRR/CCA. In attendance of this meeting were the Permanent Secretaries/Deputies, Directors, and Disaster Focal Persons/Officials in ministries/sectors, NGOs, European Union and United Nations Personnel.
